I was listening to the net@Night netcast while mowing my lawn and was introduced to a unique service that makes podcasts accessible via a time tested medium.Let’s say you have a podcast you would like to follow such as Business Week’s Cover Story or the Los Angeles Times Front Page but you don’t have an portable iPod-like device or even if you do, on a trip my iPod can get out of sync pretty fast.
No need to miss a beat, simply call up the phone number associated with the podcast(s) you have selected and voila, you begin listening right over your phone. I thought this to be a bit redundant at first and then I called +1 (831) 480-3920 to listen to TalkCrunch as they had an interview with Amazon.com’s Jeff Bezos.
We have unlimited North American calling at the office so I didn’t concern myself with where (831) might be located. I actually enjoyed being able to listen to the podcast in one ear with my convenient phone headset and was even able to rewind and fast-forward using the * and # buttons. I am sure this will come in very handy when connected to Skype from a hotel room.
The two places to add and browse podcasts-by-phone are: PodLinez - Very simple and straight forward list of phone numbers for podcasts and a spot to add your own. FonPods - Adds a single phone number with directory system with added abilities for programming, rating, and archive browsing.
Here is a USA Today article about FonPods for cell phone users that also includes some cool tips on making mobile photos more useful.
